"New to the Tribe" is a life-sized, Afrocentric sculpture that pays homage to the cultural significance of the traditional afro pick while celebrating identity, heritage, and community. The 3D face perched atop the box-like body symbolizes the individuality and pride embodied in Black hair culture. Covered entirely in flowing hair extensions, the piece highlights the beauty, texture, and significance of Black hair as a marker of identity and legacy.
The long wooden spikes, adorned with cow prints, bridge the traditional and the contemporary, referencing both ancestral roots and modern aesthetics. The cow print is a nod to natural elements and individuality, creating a bold connection between the earth, heritage, and artistic expression.
"New to the Tribe" serves as a powerful statement on unity and belonging. It invites viewers to reflect on the stories, traditions, and pride passed through generations while celebrating the vibrant expressions of culture that continue to evolve. This piece is both a tribute to the past and a call to honor the tribe we each belong to in the present.
